In short: Before he became a global icon, Jackie Chan directed and starred in The Young Master. This martial arts classic marked his debut with Golden Harvest, featured his first recorded theme song, and became the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong history upon its 1980 release, fundamentally changing his career trajectory forever.

Released in Hong Kong on February 9, 1980, The Young Master was a pivotal moment for Jackie Chan. It served as his second directorial effort and his first collaboration with the production powerhouse Golden Harvest. The narrative follows Dragon, a martial artist who embarks on a quest to redeem his disgraced brother, Tiger, after a betrayal during a high-stakes Lion dance competition. The plot escalates into a complex web of mistaken identity, involving a local police chief and a dangerous criminal named Kam.

The production process was notoriously intense. Chan reportedly delivered an initial cut that spanned three hours, which was eventually trimmed down to two distinct versions: a 106-minute edit for Hong Kong audiences and a condensed 90-minute version for international markets. During filming, the physical demands of the project nearly proved fatal, as Chan suffered a throat injury that left him on the verge of suffocation. The final fight sequence, where Dragon consumes water from an opium pipe to gain the strength to defeat Kam, remains one of the most memorable displays of Chan's signature blend of comedy and combat.

Commercially, the film was a juggernaut. It claimed the top spot at the Hong Kong box office for 1980, setting a new domestic record. Its success extended far beyond local borders, dominating the South Korean market with over 436,000 admissions in Seoul and performing strongly in Japan and Spain. In total, the film earned approximately US$6.2 million during its initial run, a figure estimated to be worth around US$24 million today. Beyond the screen, the project marked Chan's entry into music, as he performed the closing theme, Kung Fu Fighting Man, establishing a precedent for his future cinematic contributions.
