How a fake college romance became one of Thailand's most successful television exports
In short: When Tine Teepakorn tries to escape a persistent admirer by faking a relationship with the stoic guitarist Sarawat Guntithanon, he triggers an unexpected emotional evolution. This 2020 Thai series, based on a novel by JittiRain, transformed a simple charade into a global phenomenon that redefined the boys' love genre.
The series centers on the unlikely pairing of Tine, a law student and cheerleader, and Sarawat, a popular music club member. To deter an unwanted suitor named Green, Tine convinces the introverted Sarawat to act as his boyfriend. While the premise relies on a classic trope of convenience, the narrative delves into the characters' personal insecurities and the gradual, often hesitant, shift from a performative arrangement to a genuine romantic connection.
Premiering on 21 February 2020, the show quickly transcended its local roots. By 19 April 2020, it had already surpassed 100 million views on the platform LINE TV. Its cultural footprint was bolstered by a soundtrack featuring the band Scrubb—a group that also inspired the original novel by JittiRain—and the song 'Kan Goo' reached the top spot on Thailand's Joox Top 100 chart. The series was eventually recognized as one of the top ten most viewed television series on both LINE TV and YouTube in 2020.
The immense popularity of the show necessitated an expansion of its universe. Following the conclusion of the original series on 15 May 2020, GMMTV produced a sequel titled Still 2gether, which premiered on 14 August 2020. This follow-up explores the protagonists' lives a year later as they navigate the pressures of balancing their established relationship with their emerging careers. The franchise's success ultimately culminated in a feature film, solidifying its status as a landmark in contemporary Thai media.
Beyond the central romance, the show weaves in a complex web of supporting characters, including Sarawat’s younger brother Phukong and various friends who grapple with their own social and romantic challenges. By blending lighthearted comedy with the earnest exploration of evolving feelings, the series managed to capture a massive international audience, proving that even a story built on a fake premise can resonate with profound authenticity.
