In short: In 1976, director Isao Takahata transformed a small monthly tale from the Italian novel Heart into a sprawling 52-episode epic. This animated series, known globally as Marco, captivated audiences from South America to the Middle East, following a young boy's desperate trek across continents to find his missing mother.

The series, titled 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, was a cornerstone of the World Masterpiece Theater, a Japanese animation staple that adapted classic literature annually. While the source material by Edmondo De Amicis was merely a short segment of his novel Cuore, the production team—including supervisor Hayao Miyazaki and character designer Yōichi Kotabe—massively expanded the narrative. To ensure authenticity, the team conducted extensive on-site research in Genoa and Argentina, crafting a story set during an 1881 economic depression.

The plot follows 9-year-old Marco Rossi, whose mother, Anna, travels to Argentina to work as a maid to support their struggling family. When her letters cease, Marco embarks on a perilous journey, sneaking onto a ship to Brazil and eventually traversing Argentina. Along the way, he encounters a cast of new characters created for the series, such as the puppeteer Peppino and his daughters, Fiorina and Concetta. His journey is marked by hardship, including the loss of his brother's pet monkey Amedio's original owner's trust, and a series of near-misses before he finally reaches his mother in Tucumán.

The show's impact was profound, achieving massive success in countries like Brazil, Spain, and the Arab world, where it was titled Goodbye Marco. Its legacy persisted long after its 1976 debut, spawning a 1980 condensed film and a 1999 feature-length remake. Decades later, it remained culturally significant, ranking 81st on a 2005 TV Asahi list of top anime and 20th in a 2006 survey of celebrity favorites. By turning a minor literary episode into a global odyssey, the series solidified its place as a classic of world animation.
