The year the Oscars faced a proxy protest and a record-breaking score
In short: The 45th Academy Awards were defined by a high-profile boycott and a historic first. While Marlon Brando sent a proxy to claim his trophy, the ceremony also saw the first time every single winner took the stage together, marking a shift in how Hollywood celebrates its own.
The 1973 ceremony was dominated by two heavyweights: The Godfather and Cabaret. While The Godfather took home the Best Picture trophy with three wins, Cabaret set a new benchmark by securing eight awards, becoming the film with the most wins to ever lose the top prize. This era also saw the first time two African American women, Cicely Tyson and Diana Ross, were nominated for Best Actress.
The event is perhaps most remembered for Marlon Brando's refusal to attend the ceremony to accept his Best Actor award for The Godfather. Instead, he sent Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American activist, to speak on his behalf as a protest. This move sparked a divided reaction from the audience, resulting in both cheers and jeers. In response to this proxy acceptance, the Academy established a new rule: winners unable or unwilling to attend must have their awards presented by the host rather than a representative.
Technically and historically, the night was a series of firsts and corrections. It was the inaugural year that every winner appeared on stage at the conclusion of the broadcast. It also marked Charlie Chaplin's only competitive win, for his 20-year-old film Limelight, which only became eligible after screening in Los Angeles in 1972. Additionally, the Academy had to navigate a music branch controversy regarding The Godfather's score, eventually reducing the film's nomination count from 11 to 10 after a re-balloting process.
The broadcast reached a massive television audience of 85 million viewers. It also featured a notable late arrival by Charlton Heston, whose absence forced Clint Eastwood to step in as a presenter. Eastwood’s improvised quips about Heston's lack of lines in previous films became a highlight of the night, illustrating the unpredictable nature of live awards history.
