How a low-budget shark thriller became a surprise box office success story
In short: When a cage diving expedition in Mexico goes wrong, two sisters find themselves trapped on the ocean floor. With oxygen running low and great white sharks circling, the film 47 Meters Down turns a claustrophobic nightmare into a commercial hit that defied its modest production budget and chaotic distribution history.
Directed by Johannes Roberts and released in 2017, 47 Meters Down follows sisters Lisa and Kate, who are stranded 47 meters below the surface after their diving cage winch fails. The film relies on the terrifying premise of isolation, where the protagonists must navigate nitrogen narcosis, dwindling air supplies, and the constant threat of predatory sharks. The production, which took place in the Dominican Republic in 2015, utilized shark behavior consultant Lukas Seoane to add a layer of authenticity to the underwater sequences.
The film's journey to the screen was far from straightforward. Originally titled In the Deep, the project was slated for a direct-to-video release by Dimension Films in August 2016. However, after Entertainment Studios acquired the rights, they cancelled the home release and pivoted to a theatrical strategy. This transition caused a minor stir when some retailers accidentally sold physical copies of the film under its original working title, turning those discs into rare collector's items before the theatrical version debuted in June 2017.
Despite receiving mixed critical reviews—holding a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the film proved to be a significant financial success. Produced on a budget of approximately $5.5 million, it grossed over $61 million worldwide. Its performance in North America was particularly notable, where it debuted to $11.5 million and finished as the second highest-grossing independent film of 2017. The success of the original prompted a sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which was released in 2019 with an entirely new cast and setting.
The film's impact extends beyond its box office numbers, having earned a nomination for Best Horror Film at the 44th Saturn Awards. While some critics felt the movie did not fully maximize the potential of its premise, it was widely recognized as a sturdily crafted thriller that effectively utilized its limited setting to generate suspense. By balancing technical constraints with a high-stakes narrative, the film managed to secure its place as a memorable entry in the survival horror genre.
