Can a simple bed sheet capture the crushing weight of eternity and human loss?
In short: In David Lowery’s 2017 drama A Ghost Story, a man dies and remains tethered to his home as a spectral figure draped in a white sheet. What begins as a domestic tragedy evolves into a profound, non-linear meditation on time, memory, and the existential anxiety of being forgotten.
Director David Lowery conceived the film while navigating an existential crisis sparked by fears of global catastrophe. Seeking to ground abstract themes of time and legacy in a physical space, he combined the image of a traditional, rudimentary ghost costume with his own personal attachment to the house he once shared with his wife. The resulting film, shot in a claustrophobic 1.33:1 aspect ratio, follows a ghost—played primarily by Casey Affleck—as he watches decades, and eventually centuries, pass within the walls of his former home.
The production process was as unconventional as the narrative. To achieve the iconic ghost look, the crew discovered that a standard king-sized sheet was insufficient, requiring Affleck to wear additional garments underneath and rely on puppeteering to maintain the costume's shape. Because the fabric obscured his features and movement, Lowery directed Affleck to act with extreme rigidity and patience. Some scenes were even filmed using art director David Pink as a stand-in. The house itself was a real property slated for demolition, allowing the production to film on-site for free before its destruction.
The film’s structure defies linear progression, moving from the 19th century to a futuristic cityscape. Critics responded with near-universal acclaim, praising its poetic exploration of grief and the persistence of love. By the end of its theatrical run, the film grossed nearly $2 million worldwide. It remains a singular work that transforms a trope often associated with humor into a haunting, meditative experience, ultimately asking what remains of us when our physical presence—and the structures we inhabit—are erased by time.
