The final chapter of the Die Hard franchise was a global box office success
In short: Released in 2013, A Good Day to Die Hard marked the conclusion of a legendary action series. Despite earning over $300 million worldwide, the film faced harsh criticism for its script and direction, ultimately becoming the lowest-rated installment in the franchise's history according to both critics and audiences.
The production of the fifth Die Hard film was a long-gestating project, with pre-production officially commencing in September 2011 under director John Moore. Filming took place primarily in Budapest, Hungary, which served as a stand-in for Moscow. The film’s visual aesthetic was defined by Moore’s preference for handheld camera work, intended to mirror the protagonist's disorientation in a foreign environment, while prioritizing practical effects over digital enhancements.
The plot follows John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, as he travels to Russia to assist his estranged son, Jack, who is revealed to be an undercover CIA operative. The narrative centers on a scheme involving a Chernobyl-era vault filled with weapons-grade uranium, rather than the secret file initially suspected. Despite the film's financial performance—grossing $304.7 million against a $92 million budget—it was widely panned. Critics, including A. O. Scott and Kenneth Turan, argued that the film lacked the character nuance and wit that defined the earlier entries, labeling the action sequences as implausible and the script as uninspired.
Following the film's release, there were various attempts to develop a sixth installment, tentatively titled McClane, which would have explored the character's origins in the 1970s. However, the project faced numerous delays and was eventually cancelled by Disney in August 2019. Bruce Willis, who had initially hoped to retire the character in a final sixth film, ultimately retired from acting in 2022 following a diagnosis of aphasia, cementing A Good Day to Die Hard as the final cinematic appearance of John McClane.
