How a 1998 crime thriller turned a simple discovery into a moral nightmare
In short: When three men find a crashed plane filled with $4.4 million in cash, they hatch a plan to keep it. What follows is a descent into deceit and murder, proving that even the most ordinary people can harbor terrifying capacities for evil when faced with the promise of easy wealth.
Directed by Sam Raimi and based on Scott B. Smith’s 1993 novel, A Simple Plan follows Hank Mitchell, his brother Jacob, and their friend Lou after they discover a fortune in a remote Minnesota forest. The film explores the erosion of trust as the characters attempt to hide the money, leading to a series of increasingly desperate and violent choices. While the book is set in Ohio, the film adaptation shifts the location to Minnesota, a change suggested by the author to enhance the story's atmosphere.
The production was famously difficult, marked by what is known as development hell. Before Raimi took the helm, the project passed through several hands, including directors Mike Nichols, Ben Stiller, and John Boorman. Filming itself was equally challenging; the crew struggled with unpredictable weather in Wisconsin and Minnesota, often lacking the snow required for the narrative. To maintain a consistent look, the production team utilized a mix of real snow, shaved ice, and computer-generated imagery to create the film’s signature stark, gray, and somber aesthetic.
Upon its 1998 release, the film was met with critical acclaim, particularly for the performances of Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton. Critics praised Raimi’s restrained direction, which marked a departure from his earlier, highly stylized work. Despite its positive reception—earning two Academy Award nominations—the film underperformed at the box office, grossing $16.3 million against a $17 million budget. Nevertheless, it remains a celebrated example of a character-driven thriller, noted for its emotional complexity and its exploration of how quickly a simple plan can unravel into tragedy.
