The Tragic, Meticulously Restored Masterpiece That Bankrupted Its Own Studio
In short: George Cukor’s 1954 musical drama A Star Is Born was a critical triumph and a massive financial failure. Despite Judy Garland’s career-defining performance, the film was butchered by studio executives to shorten its runtime. Decades later, a painstaking restoration effort recovered lost footage, revealing the film’s original, intended grandeur.
Directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Garland and James Mason, the 1954 production of A Star Is Born was intended as a major comeback for Garland after her departure from MGM. The film follows the rise of aspiring singer Esther Blodgett and the simultaneous decline of Norman Maine, a fading movie star struggling with alcoholism. Despite the film's eventual status as a classic, the production was plagued by challenges, including Garland’s personal health struggles and Cukor’s difficulty casting the male lead, a role Cary Grant famously declined.
Upon its release, the film was a victim of its own ambition. Warner Bros. executives, fearing that the original three-hour runtime would limit daily ticket sales, made drastic cuts to the film without Cukor’s input. These edits removed crucial dramatic scenes and two major musical numbers, leaving the director devastated. Although the film earned $6 million in North American rentals, its production costs exceeded $5 million, resulting in a net loss for the studio.
The film’s legacy was saved in the 1980s through the work of film preservationist Ronald Haver. After locating missing footage in a storage facility linked to a convicted thief, Haver and his team reconstructed a near-complete version of the film. While some dramatic sequences remained lost, the team cleverly interspersed the original stereophonic soundtrack with production stills to maintain continuity. This 176-minute restoration, premiered in 1983, allowed audiences to finally experience the scope of Cukor’s original vision, cementing the film’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s most significant works.
