A wartime spy thriller forced to rewrite its climax after the Pearl Harbor attack.
In short: The 1942 film Across the Pacific was originally scripted to prevent a Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor. When the real-world attack occurred, production halted for three months. The studio eventually pivoted the plot to focus on a sabotage attempt against the Panama Canal, creating a tense, shifting espionage melodrama.
Directed by John Huston and finished by Vincent Sherman, the film features Humphrey Bogart as Rick Leland, a disgraced soldier turned secret agent. The narrative follows Leland aboard a ship bound for Yokohama, where he encounters a web of enemy spies. The production faced significant logistical hurdles, including the sudden departure of Huston to join the Army Signal Corps mid-filming. Huston famously left his lead actor in an impossible, tied-up predicament, forcing the studio to discard footage and draft a new resolution.
The film’s atmosphere relied on innovative technical choices. To simulate the motion of the ocean, the set was mounted on hydraulic lifts. Cinematography also played a key role in the film's moral ambiguity, with cameras subtly moving toward and away from actors to create a sense of disorientation. Critics at the time, including Bosley Crowther of The New York Times, lauded the direction for its ability to maintain fearful uncertainty, comparing the experience to having a knife held against one's ribs.
Casting choices reflected the era's geopolitical climate. Following President Franklin D. Roosevelt's March 1942 order regarding the internment of Japanese Americans, the production struggled to employ Japanese actors. Records from the USC Cinema-Television Library indicate that the studio opted to cast ethnically Chinese performers to portray the Japanese characters. Despite these production complexities and the abrupt shift in plot, the film was a commercial success, earning over $2.3 million globally across domestic and international markets.
