The heavy bronze weight of Hollywood's most exclusive peer recognition
In short: In the high-stakes world of Hollywood, the Actor Awards serve as a critical barometer for Oscar success. Unlike many industry accolades, these honors are determined by the peers who actually do the work, making the 12-pound bronze statuette a significant marker of professional mastery.
Founded in 1995, the Actor Awards (formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards) were established to recognize excellence in both film and primetime television. Because the winners are chosen by the union's own members, the ceremony is often viewed as a reliable indicator of success at the Academy Awards. Nominations undergo strict scrutiny by two separate bodies for television and film, where 2,100 union members chosen at random manage the selection. The full membership, which numbered 165,000 in 2012, then votes for the final winners. The physical award, known as "The Actor," is a 16-inch tall nude male figure holding the masks of comedy and tragedy. It is cast in solid bronze by the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, California, and weighs over 12 pounds.
This substantial weight reflects the gravity of the recognition, which covers a wide spectrum of performances, from individual leading and supporting roles to ensemble work in drama, comedy, and even stunt performances. The awards have undergone significant branding and logistical shifts. In November 2025, the ceremony officially transitioned from the Screen Actors Guild Awards to the Actor Awards. While the venue has historically been the Shrine Auditorium, the broadcast medium has shifted from NBC and TNT to a livestream on Netflix's YouTube channel in 2023, and eventually to a live Netflix broadcast in 2024. To date, only two films—Shakespeare in Love and One Battle After Another—have achieved the rare feat of receiving nominations in every eligible category.
Various categories are honored, such as a Motion Picture's Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble and a Drama Series' Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble. While the Life Achievement Award is a prestigious non-competitive honor, it is excluded from the ceremony's superlatives. This peer-driven system ensures that the accolades remain grounded in the craft of performance rather than purely commercial metrics.
