In short: Before it became a Technicolor spectacle, Adventures of Don Juan was a production nightmare. Plagued by post-war shortages, industry strikes, and Errol Flynn’s deteriorating health, the film took nearly a decade to reach the screen. It remains a testament to old Hollywood’s grandest ambitions and its most turbulent behind-the-scenes realities.

The journey of Adventures of Don Juan began in 1939, when Warner Bros. first announced the project. What followed was a series of delays spanning nearly ten years. Initial plans were derailed by the onset of World War II, which shifted studio priorities toward war films and Westerns. Even when production finally gained momentum in 1945, it was halted by a lack of materials and labor strikes, leading to an indefinite postponement that saw the cast reassigned to other projects.

When filming finally commenced in October 1947 under director Vincent Sherman, the set was reportedly a site of misery. Flynn, struggling with hepatitis and a heart condition, was frequently absent due to illness and heavy drinking. His absences were so severe that he missed 64 days of shooting by March 1948. The production was so fraught with tension that screenwriter George Oppenheimer jokingly retitled the project 'Sherman’s March through George' to reflect the friction between himself and the director.

Despite the turmoil, the film achieved visual splendor, winning an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. It utilized 124 sets and over 3,700 costumes, while recycling footage from earlier Flynn hits like The Adventures of Robin Hood. While critics were divided—with some praising the pageantry and others dismissing Flynn’s acting—the film found significant success in Europe. However, it struggled to recoup its massive $2 million budget in the United States, marking a turning point that led Warner Bros. to reduce the budgets for Flynn’s future films.
