A 19th-century Western that exposes the brutal, forgotten history of Romanian slavery
In short: Set in 1835 Wallachia, the award-winning film Aferim! follows a constable hunting a fugitive Roma slave. While it adopts the visual language of a classic Western, the film offers a scathing, darkly humorous look at a historical reality that remains both unfamiliar and hauntingly recognizable to modern audiences.
Directed by Radu Jude and produced by Ada Solomon, the 2015 film Aferim!—which translates to Bravo!—earned critical acclaim, including the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. The narrative follows Costandin, an aging constable, and his son Ioniță as they traverse the countryside to capture Carfin, a Roma slave who fled the estate of the boyar Iordache. Along their journey, the pair encounters a cross-section of society, from monks and gold panners to a priest who openly spouts prejudices, illustrating a world defined by rigid hierarchy and casual cruelty.
The film’s dialogue is uniquely constructed, drawing heavily from the works of 19th-century Romanian writers such as Ion Creangă, Anton Pann, and Iordache Golescu. This linguistic foundation grounds the film in a specific historical period, even as it subverts the tropes of the American Western. Critics have praised the film for its intelligence and its ability to balance historical horror with biting humor. As noted by reviewers, the film depicts a specific, brutal past while maintaining a resonance that feels strikingly familiar to contemporary viewers.
The climax of the film underscores the limitations of individual morality within a systemic framework. Despite Costandin’s attempts to advocate for leniency, the boyar Iordache subjects the captured Carfin to a horrific public punishment. Costandin, who previously served in the 1821 Wallachian uprising under Tudor Vladimirescu, is left to lament his inability to alter the course of events. Ultimately, the film serves as a harsh historical lesson, using the Western genre to interrogate the enduring nature of prejudice and the difficulty of challenging established power structures.
