Andrzej Wajda's final masterpiece chronicles the tragic defiance of a Polish avant-garde artist
In short: In his final film, Afterimage, director Andrzej Wajda explores the harrowing life of Władysław Strzemiński. Set against the backdrop of post-war Poland, the narrative follows an influential artist who refuses to abandon abstract expressionism despite the crushing demands of a Stalinist regime that sought to erase his artistic legacy entirely.
Released in 2016, Afterimage serves as the concluding work of legendary director Andrzej Wajda, who passed away in October of that same year. The film depicts the life of Strzemiński starting in 1948, when he held a prestigious position as a lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in Łódź. His refusal to conform to the state-mandated Socialist Realism—which demanded art serve the political interests of the Stalinist regime—triggered a systematic campaign of state-sponsored persecution.
The consequences of Strzemiński’s defiance were total. He was stripped of his teaching post, and his significant contributions to modern art, such as the Neo-Plastic Room at the Museum of Art in Łódź, were either hidden from public view or physically destroyed. The state bureaucracy went further, actively preventing him from earning a living as a sign-painter, blocking his access to essential art supplies, and even denying him the food stamps necessary for survival. This punishing narrative serves as a grim reflection on the fragility of individual expression under authoritarian control.
Despite its somber subject matter, the film received critical acclaim, holding an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 75 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics have praised Wajda’s formidable directorial control, noting that while the story is undeniably bleak, it remains a worthy testament to the endurance of the human spirit. Although it was selected as the Polish entry for the 89th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, it did not receive a nomination. Nevertheless, the film remains a poignant final chapter in Wajda’s storied career, offering a stark look at the cost of artistic integrity.
