Why Marvel's latest witchy series kept changing its name before the big reveal
In short: Agatha All Along is a Marvel Studios spin-off that follows the powerful witch Agatha Harkness as she escapes a magical prison. To mirror the character's penchant for deception, the production team intentionally released a series of fake titles, turning the marketing campaign into a playful game of cat and mouse.
Created by Jac Schaeffer, the series serves as the second chapter in a planned three-part narrative arc that kicked off with WandaVision in 2021 and concludes with VisionQuest in 2026. Set three years after the events of the original show, the story finds Agatha powerless and trapped in Westview until a mysterious teenager helps her break free. Together, they assemble a new coven to navigate the legendary Witches' Road, a perilous journey that forces these disparate, selfish characters to collaborate.
The production prioritized practical effects over computer-generated imagery, aiming to evoke the nostalgic atmosphere of classic fantasy and horror cinema. This approach also made it the studio's most affordable television project to date, costing less than the $40 million budget of Echo. Filming took place throughout 2023 at Trilith Studios in Georgia and on location in Los Angeles, with the cast and crew returning from previous Marvel projects to maintain continuity.
The series is notable for its meta-commentary on witch lore and its willingness to experiment with genre, shifting from a true-crime detective homage in its opening episode to gothic horror and 1980s-inspired aesthetics. The creative team, including composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, wove original music into the narrative, most notably an ancient tune titled The Ballad of the Witches' Road. Critics praised the performances of Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza, particularly highlighting the show's exploration of motherhood and its nuanced portrayal of queer themes.
The title changes—ranging from House of Harkness to Coven of Chaos—were a deliberate strategy to reflect Agatha's manipulative nature. By the time the official title was announced in May 2024, the marketing had successfully engaged fans in the same kind of mystery-solving that defined the original WandaVision. The show premiered in September 2024 as part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, earning multiple award nominations for its unique blend of dark, spooky storytelling and character-driven drama.
