The voice behind Lana Kane: Aisha Tyler's multi-hyphenate career
In short: From voicing iconic animated characters to hosting major talk shows, Aisha Tyler has built a career defined by versatility. While many know her as a television personality, her journey involves a complex blend of improv comedy, independent filmmaking, and a deep commitment to social advocacy.
Aisha Tyler's career is a study in creative range. She is widely recognized for her long-running role as Lana Kane in the FX animated series Archer, a role she began in 2009 and maintained until 2023. Beyond animation, she has established herself as a staple of television, appearing in major productions like Friends, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Criminal Minds. Her transition into hosting saw her become a permanent co-host on The Talk in 2011, where she earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her expressive and outspoken commentary on topics including LGBT rights and African American culture.
Her roots in comedy are foundational. Tyler's interest in improv and sketch comedy began at McAteer High School in San Francisco, where she attended the School of the Arts. Her initial education shaped her career in comedy, including hosting Girl on Guy, performing stand-up, and leading the US iteration of Whose Line Is It Anyway? starting in 2013. She also demonstrated a commitment to independent media by writing, directing, and starring in the short film The Whipper and launching a Kickstarter campaign for her directorial debut, Axis, which premiered at the 2017 Sarasota Film Festival.
Tyler's public persona is often balanced by a dedication to philanthropy and intellectual pursuits. She has contributed to several magazines, authored two books—including the New York Times bestseller Self-Inflicted Wounds—and participated in various charitable efforts for organizations like the American Red Cross and the International Rescue Committee. Her career reflects a deliberate navigation between mainstream entertainment, independent artistry, and social activism.
