How Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin remake navigated casting controversies and massive global box office
In short: Directed by Guy Ritchie, the 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Despite its commercial success, the production faced significant public scrutiny regarding its casting choices, the use of makeup on extras, and the initial reception of the CGI Genie, which sparked widespread internet mockery.
The 2019 film, a live-action reimagining of Disney's 1992 animated classic, was directed by Guy Ritchie and starred Will Smith as the Genie and Mena Massoud as Aladdin. The production process was extensive, with principal photography beginning in September 2017 at Longcross Studios in England and concluding in January 2018. The film also utilized the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan for location shooting. To achieve its ambitious scale, the 'Prince Ali' musical sequence alone featured 1,000 dancers and extras.
Casting for the film became a focal point of public discourse. Producers conducted a four-month open casting call, auditioning over 2,000 actors to find a lead of Middle Eastern or Indian descent. The eventual choice of Naomi Scott, who is of English and Gujarati Ugandan-Indian heritage, for the role of Princess Jasmine drew criticism from some who felt it signaled a lack of authentic representation. Further controversy arose when reports surfaced that white extras were being applied with brown makeup to 'blend in' during filming, a practice Disney defended as necessary for specific safety and technical requirements.
The film's marketing also faced hurdles. A sneak peek revealed during the 2019 Grammy Awards received largely negative feedback, with audiences mocking the CGI design of Will Smith's Genie. This led to a wave of memes comparing the character to other blue-painted figures. Despite this, the film proved to be a financial powerhouse. By April 2020, it had earned $345 million in home entertainment and television revenue, pushing its total combined box office and home entertainment earnings to $1.396 billion, cementing its status as the third-highest-grossing Disney live-action remake to date.
