The actor who designs luxury watches and paints his own reality
In short: Aldis Hodge is often recognized for his versatile screen presence, from biopics to superhero blockbusters. However, his creative identity extends far beyond the camera. He is a self-taught horologist and a visual artist who actively shapes the aesthetics of both high-end timepieces and contemporary painting.
Aldis Hodge’s artistic portfolio is characterized by a deliberate pursuit of craftsmanship. While he gained significant recognition for his role as Alec Hardison in the TNT series Leverage—earning a Saturn Award nomination in 2009—his personal ventures reflect a deep interest in technical precision. As a self-taught horologist, Hodge founded A. Hodge Atelier, a luxury watch brand. His involvement in this niche industry is driven by a specific mission: he has publicly advocated for increased diversity within the traditional world of watchmaking. He was first cast in the series Leverage in 2007. His work in the film Straight Outta Compton also earned him notable recognition. He also appeared in the 2016 movie Hidden Figures.
Beyond the mechanical intricacies of watches, Hodge engages in visual arts and literature. A series of artworks named "Through the Looking Glass" was displayed in Los Angeles, created by him and artist Harmonia Rosales during 2018. He has a daughter with his former partner. He also writes as part of his creative output.
His creative output is multi-disciplinary, encompassing writing and painting alongside his professional acting career, which includes portraying historical figures like Jim Brown and fictional icons like Hawkman. Hodge’s background provides a unique foundation for this multi-faceted career. Born in North Carolina to parents who both served in the U.S. Marine Corps, he balanced a musical childhood—playing both the clarinet and the violin—with formal training at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. This blend of military lineage, musical training, and design education informs his current status as a creator who bridges the gap between Hollywood entertainment and high-art craftsmanship. His older brother is also an actor. His father originally came from Saint Thomas. His mother is from Florida.
