How a high school friendship built a billion-dollar Hollywood partnership
In short: In the early 2000s, two 24-year-olds were unexpectedly handed the reins of a major television series. This unlikely duo, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, would go on to become Forbes' 'Hollywood's Secret Weapons,' driving massive box office returns and reshaping modern sci-fi franchises.
The partnership between Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci began long before they were industry powerhouses; the pair were best friends in high school. Their professional collaboration first took shape on the syndicated series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. When lead actor Kevin Sorbo suffered a stroke during the show's fourth season, the 24-year-old Kurtzman and Orci were placed in charge of producing storylines to manage the actor's absence.
Their transition from television to blockbuster film was catalyzed by a rewrite of Michael Bay's The Island. While the film's critical reception was mixed, its $163 million worldwide box office return on a $126 million budget paved the way for their work on the Transformers franchise. Although films like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen faced critical scrutiny, the duo's work on these projects helped generate a combined $1.7 billion at the global box office.
While their film partnership officially ended in April 2014—with both men stating they would only collaborate on television moving forward—Kurtzman has remained a central figure in expanding the Star Trek universe. Since signing a five-year deal with CBS Television Studios in 2018, he has overseen a massive expansion of the franchise, including series such as Star Trek: Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Through his production company, Secret Hideout, Kurtzman extended his deal with CBS Studios through 2026, continuing his role as a primary architect of modern science fiction television.
