In short: Director Robert Zemeckis and writer Steven Knight crafted Allied, a 2016 espionage drama starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. The film’s premise originated from a story Knight heard when he was 21, yet despite extensive research, he could never verify if the tragic tale of a spy-turned-lover was actually true.

The film follows Max Vatan, a Canadian intelligence officer, and Marianne Beauséjour, a French Resistance fighter, who pose as a married couple in 1942 Casablanca to assassinate a German official. Their mission leads to a genuine romance, marriage, and a life in London. However, the narrative takes a dark turn in 1944 when Max is informed that his wife may be a German sleeper agent. He is ordered to conduct a high-stakes loyalty test, forcing him to choose between his duty and the woman he loves.

Steven Knight’s screenplay was inspired by a story he heard from his girlfriend's aunt, who claimed her brother had fallen for a French woman during the war, only to discover she was a German spy and kill her under orders. While Knight could not find historical records to confirm the account, he maintained the story's emotional core. The production, which cost approximately $85 million, faced significant box office challenges, ultimately losing an estimated $75–90 million. Critics were sharply divided; some praised the film’s polished costume design by Joanna Johnston and Alan Silvestri’s musical score, while others criticized the leads' chemistry and the screenplay's pacing.

The film’s visual style was meticulously planned, with cinematographer Don Burgess mapping complex scenes using virtual cinematography. Because filming in Morocco proved difficult due to modern architectural changes, the production utilized the Canary Islands to stand in for Casablanca. The cast and crew faced unique challenges, including Marion Cotillard’s discomfort with firearms and the need to repurpose studio sets rapidly to stay within budget. Despite its mixed reception and status as a box office flop, the film remains a deliberate homage to the classic Hollywood wartime dramas of the past.
