The studio that failed to launch but built a billion-dollar empire
In short: Steven Spielberg wanted to revolutionize animation, but a series of box office bombs and creative fractures led to the collapse of his British studio. Yet, while Amblimation vanished from the map, its DNA became the foundation for one of the most successful animation powerhouses in history.
Formed in May 1989, Amblimation was born from the success of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and a fractured partnership between Spielberg and animator Don Bluth. Due to creative differences, Spielberg parted ways with Bluth and established the studio in a former factory in Acton, London. The company was a collaborative venture between Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures, employing a diverse crew of 250 people from 15 different nations.
The studio's trajectory was derailed by a series of production hurdles. While developing 'We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story'—an adaptation of 'Cats'—the project faced constant delays because Andrew Lloyd Webber was dissatisfied with the story direction. This led to the project being scrapped, forcing a reshuffling of directors. When 'We're Back!' eventually premiered, it was a box-office failure, grossing just over $9 million and failing to match the massive success of 'Jurassic Park,' which had been released the previous summer.
The financial fallout of 'We're Back!' created severe budgetary constraints for the studio's final film, 'Balto.' In 1994, Spielberg co-founded DreamWorks Pictures, leading to a strategic migration of talent. By October 1994, 120 of Amblimation's crew members were moved to Los Angeles to form DreamWorks Animation. Although Amblimation was officially closed in 1997 after only eight years, its legacy lived on: nearly all 250 original crew members eventually joined DreamWorks, and one of its abandoned projects, 'Shrek!', was eventually produced by DreamWorks as the 2001 hit 'Shrek.'
The studio's history serves as a case study in how creative friction and commercial failure can lead to institutional rebirth. While Amblimation as a brand failed, its human capital was successfully harvested to build a new industry giant.
