How a childhood trip to Thailand inspired a hit Disney animated fantasy series
In short: Created by Matt Braly, the animated series Amphibia follows a teenager transported to a marshy world of anthropomorphic frogs. Drawing from Thai heritage, classic video games, and personal history, the show evolved from a concept called Amphibiland into a celebrated three-act story about growth, friendship, and the complexity of change.
Amphibia debuted on Disney Channel in June 2019, concluding its three-season run in May 2022. The narrative centers on Anne Boonchuy, a Thai-American girl who, alongside her friends Sasha Waybright and Marcy Wu, is magically whisked away to a dangerous, frog-populated island. Braly, who previously worked on Gravity Falls, designed the series as a deliberate exploration of transformation, mirroring the biological development of frogs from tadpoles. By grounding the show in the experiences of a Thai-American lead—a first for an animated series—Braly aimed to provide authentic representation, even incorporating specific cultural touchstones like a Wat Thai temple in Los Angeles during the third season.
The production process was marked by a commitment to hand-drawn animation, with studios like Rough Draft Korea and Sunmin Image Pictures handling the visuals. Each episode required roughly nine months of labor, including a rigorous pre-production phase. The show’s aesthetic drew inspiration from diverse sources, ranging from the 1982 film The Dark Crystal to the 1977 adaptation of The Hobbit. Braly’s creative process was highly collaborative, encouraging storyboard artists to pitch ideas and ensuring the tone remained balanced between intense, high-stakes storytelling and humor suitable for all ages.
Beyond the screen, the series expanded into a broader franchise. This includes the 2022 release of Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia and the 2025 art book, The Art of Amphibia. As of 2025, Braly has indicated potential discussions with Disney regarding future specials or miniseries that could continue the story. The show’s legacy is defined by its critical reception, earning an Annie Award for character design in 2021 and consistent praise for its emotional depth, which Braly intentionally structured to mirror the character arcs he admired in other animated works.
