How a cursed doll turned a quiet house into a supernatural playground
In short: In the sixth installment of The Conjuring Universe, the demonic Annabelle doll is finally locked away in the Warrens' artifact room. But when an uninvited guest accidentally releases the evil, the house becomes a trap for the Warrens' young daughter, forcing her to survive a night of restless spirits.
Released in 2019, Annabelle Comes Home marked the directorial debut of Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote the story with producer James Wan. The film serves as a sequel to the 2014 and 2017 Annabelle films, fitting into the wider Conjuring Universe timeline shortly after the beginning of the first movie. It follows the Warrens' 10-year-old daughter, Judy, played by Mckenna Grace, as she faces a terrifying night when her babysitter's friend, Daniela, inadvertently triggers the demonic entity trapped within the doll.
The narrative centers on the containment of evil. After demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren secure the doll in a sacred glass case, the film explores the chaos that ensues when that barrier is breached. The Annabelle demon unleashes a host of other haunted objects, including the Ferryman, the Bride, and a Feeley Meeley board game. The film’s production, which concluded in December 2018 in Los Angeles, was dedicated to the memory of Lorraine Warren, who passed away in April 2019.
While the film grossed $231.3 million worldwide, it received a mixed reception from critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 64% approval rating, with many noting it offered fun for fans despite being less frightening than its predecessors. Commercially, it earned a net profit of $64 million, though its $20.3 million opening weekend marked the lowest debut of any film in The Conjuring franchise. Despite the mixed critical response, the project remains a significant entry in the series, blending supernatural horror with the personal stakes of the Warren family.
