How a decades-long struggle became the highest-grossing horror franchise in history
In short: It took 20 years and a six-studio bidding war to bring the Warrens to the big screen. Today, The Conjuring Universe stands as a massive cinematic empire, blending dramatized paranormal investigations with a sprawling web of spin-offs that explore the origins of the very demons that haunt its protagonists.
The franchise's journey began long before its 2013 debut. Producer Tony DeRosa-Grund spent nearly 14 years attempting to adapt the real-life adventures of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The project even faced a period in turnaround after a bidding war involving six studios failed to reach a conclusion. Eventually, New Line Cinema secured the rights, and the story was reshaped by writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes, who shifted the perspective from the families being haunted to the Warrens themselves.
The main series, directed initially by James Wan, focuses on the Warrens' most famous cases, such as the 1971 Perron family haunting in Rhode Island and the 1977 Enfield poltergeist incident in London. While the primary films aim for accuracy to the Warrens' real-world claims, the franchise has expanded into various sub-genres through spin-offs. These include the Annabelle doll's history and the origins of the demonic entity Valak in The Nun series.
Commercially, the universe has been a juggernaut. The combined films have earned over $2.1 billion at the global box office against a total production cost of approximately $208 million. While critical reception has varied—ranging from the well-received first two installments to more mixed reviews for later entries like The Nun and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It—the franchise remains the most successful horror series to date.
