The high-stakes heist where zombies are just the background noise
In short: While most zombie films focus on survival, one spin-off pivoted to a romantic-comedy heist. Set in a world of banking instability caused by the undead, it traded gore for safe-cracking and getaway cars, proving that even an apocalypse provides the perfect cover for a high-stakes robbery.
The Army of the Dead franchise began as a spiritual successor to George A. Romero's 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. After years in development hell—where studios initially balked at spending significant money on zombie cinema—Netflix acquired the rights in 2019. Director Zack Snyder spearheaded the project, aiming for a 're-envisioning' that balanced homage to Romero’s vision with modern action tropes and high production values.
While the primary film features mercenaries infiltrating a quarantined Las Vegas to retrieve cash from a casino vault before a tactical nuclear strike, its spin-off, Army of Thieves, took a distinct creative turn. Produced as a joint venture between The Stone Quarry, Pantaleon Films, and Netflix, the prequel focuses on Ludwig Dieter (played by Matthias Schweighöfer). Rather than prioritizing the undead, the film is described as a romantic-comedy heist similar to The Italian Job.
The narrative logic relies on the 'instability in banking institutions' caused by the zombie pandemic. Because the undead are moving money around, it creates a unique window for criminals to operate. While zombies do appear and the world remains canonically infested, the focus shifts to Dieter learning to crack safes with previous heist teams. This expansion strategy was part of an ambitious plan that included an anime-styled series and sequels like Planet of the Dead, though many of these projects were quietly cancelled in August 2024.
The franchise's world-building is dense, featuring 'alpha' zombies engineered with extraterrestrial DNA from Area 51. These evolved creatures are smarter, faster, and organized, capable of breeding and even being sent to locations like Iran. Despite the complex lore involving time loops and robot zombies, the spin-off serves as a standalone exploration of how human greed persists even when society collapses.
