The digital sensor that redefined the look of modern cinema
In short: After launching in 2010, the Arri Alexa established itself as a leading tool, utilized for more than 70% of the 100 highest-earning movies from 2016 onwards. It is a system designed to treat digital data like a physical negative, offering a range of color and light that some masters claim exceeds traditional film.
The Arri Alexa series represents a pivotal transition for Arri from film to digital cinematography. Introduced in April 2010, the original Alexa Classic utilized the ALEV III sensor, which featured a Super-35mm CMOS design. To bridge the gap between digital and analog, Arri introduced Log-C imaging science. This method allows digital images to be processed much like scanned film, preserving a vast dynamic range. The sensor's sensitivity is notable for its latitude, capable of capturing seven stops of overexposure and seven stops of underexposure.
The lineage of the Alexa is marked by significant engineering leaps. In 2012, the Alexa Studio introduced a 4:3 sensor ideal for anamorphic lenses, while the 2015 Alexa Mini provided a compact alternative for smaller rigs. Arri also pushed the boundaries of scale with the Alexa 65, announced in 2014. This massive system uses the A3X sensor—a vertical stack of three ALEV III sensors—to achieve a 6560x3100 resolution. Such high-end hardware has been used in major productions, from the underwater sequences of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to the entire Marvel epics Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Recent innovations focus on even greater precision and versatility. The 2022 Alexa 35 introduced the first new sensor for the family since the original model, the ALEV 4. This sensor provides an impressive 17 stops of dynamic range and supports native 4K anamorphic shooting. As the technology evolves, the system continues to dominate the Academy Awards; eight films shot on Alexa have won Best Picture, and the system has secured ten Oscars for Best Cinematacy, including a five-year winning streak from 2011 to 2015.
