In short: The 2009 Astro Boy film was a massive gamble that failed to capture the magic of Osamu Tezuka’s original manga. Despite a star-studded cast and a $65 million budget, the film’s lackluster performance at the box office forced the closure of its production house, Imagi Studios, just months after release.

The journey to bring Astro Boy to the big screen was fraught with over a decade of development hell. Sony Pictures Entertainment initially acquired the rights in 1997, cycling through various directors and concepts—including live-action and animatronics—before Imagi Animation Studios finally took the helm in 2006. By the time David Bowers took over as director in 2008, the production had shifted toward a CGI-heavy approach, utilizing Pixar’s RenderMan software to craft the futuristic, floating world of Metro City.

To appeal to Western audiences, the creative team made significant departures from the source material. They aged the protagonist from a nine-year-old to a thirteen-year-old, slimmed his proportions, and replaced his traditional shirtless look with a blue jacket and white shirt. Perhaps most controversially, they altered his iconic 'kawaii' facial features, such as his large eyes and eyelashes, which the team feared appeared too feminine. These aesthetic shifts, intended to broaden the film's appeal, resulted in a character design that critics noted looked distinctly Caucasian, moving away from the character's roots.

The narrative itself followed a familiar tragedy: Dr. Tenma, grieving the loss of his son Toby, creates a robot replica powered by a positive blue energy core. When the robot is rejected by his creator, he falls to the polluted Earth below, eventually battling a gargantuan, red-core-powered Peacekeeper robot. Despite the film's ambitious scope and an orchestral score recorded at Abbey Road Studios, it earned only $42 million worldwide. The financial shortfall was catastrophic for Imagi Studios, which ceased operations on February 5, 2010, marking a somber end to a project that had been in the works since the late nineties.
