Meet Shero, the foul-mouthed tabby cat who turned Turkish animation into a global cult
In short: Shero is not your typical cartoon pet. A crass, short-tempered tabby from Istanbul, he navigates a violent, adult-oriented world of bank robberies, reanimated corpses, and romantic entanglements. This self-funded Turkish production defied expectations, evolving from a local comic strip into a bizarre international phenomenon with a dedicated global following.
Bad Cat, or Kötü Kedi Şerafettin, originated as a comic strip by Bülent Üstün before being adapted into a 2016 feature film by directors Mehmet Kurtuluş and Ayşe Ünal. Produced by Anima Istanbul, the project was a self-funded independent effort that utilized a massive team of over 300 people to animate the chaos using Autodesk Maya. The film’s narrative follows Shero, a cat owned by a man named Tank, whose life descends into a series of absurd, high-stakes conflicts involving a vengeful, repeatedly reanimated cartoonist and a quest for liquor.
The film’s tone is decidedly adult, featuring themes and content that sparked controversy upon its release. In Turkey, the Radio and Television Supreme Council fined the channel Kanal D for broadcasting the film in 2017 due to its mature content. Similarly, in the UAE, theaters faced complaints for ignoring the film's PG-15 rating. Despite—or perhaps because of—this edge, the film found a wide international audience, receiving dubs in languages ranging from Hindi and Persian to Brazilian Portuguese and Catalan, eventually landing on the American streaming service Tubi in 2023.
Beyond the screen, the Bad Cat universe has expanded into other media, including mobile game adaptations. The film’s journey from a local Turkish comic to a global, multi-language release highlights the unpredictable nature of independent animation. By blending dark comedy with action-heavy sequences, the creators crafted a distinct identity that resonated far beyond its original cultural context, proving that even a crude, short-tempered tabby can find a home on the world stage.
