The studio that survived a corporate death sentence to build Hogwarts
In short: Avalanche Software is a masterclass in corporate survival. After being shuttered by Disney due to a cooling market, the studio was resurrected by Warner Bros. to produce one of the most successful open-world RPGs of the last decade. It is a story of technical resilience over corporate whims.
Avalanche Software was born in October 1995 from a logistical pivot. Four programmers from Sculptured Software wanted to join a company called Saffire but refused to commute to their offices. Saffire's owner instead convinced them to form their own independent studio in Salt Lake City. This foundational independence set the stage for a decade of high-profile acquisitions. In 2005, the studio entered a period of heavy branding under the Walt Disney Company.
For ten years, the team focused on Disney-related properties, producing titles like Toy Story 3 and the toys-to-life game Disney Infinity. However, the industry shifted. By May 2016, Disney Interactive Studios was shuttered entirely because the toys-to-life market failed to grow enough to offset rising development costs.
Many employees were forced to find new work, and the studio effectively ceased to exist. The studio's resurrection began in January 2017 when Warner Bros. Games acquired and reopened the studio. Under the leadership of founder John Blackburn, the team pivoted back to major original and licensed IPs. Their first project under this new ownership was Cars 3: Driven to Win. This era culminated in the 2023 release of Hogwarts Legacy, their first non-Disney title in years. Despite internal controversies involving a game director's social media posts in 2021, the studio successfully navigated the transition from a specialized toy-tech developer to a powerhouse of open-world RPGs.
