In short: While best known as the emotionless android Data in Star Trek, Brent Spiner’s career spans far beyond the bridge of the Enterprise. From early days as a gunfighter at Six Flags to Broadway stages and voice acting, Spiner has cultivated a diverse body of work across film, television, and music.

Born in Houston in 1949, Brent Spiner’s path to stardom began in local theater and as a performer at Six Flags AstroWorld. By the 1970s, he had moved to New York, where he established himself as a stage actor in Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including Sunday in the Park with George. His early television work included appearances on All My Children and a recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom Night Court, a character he revisited as recently as 2024.

Spiner’s defining role arrived in 1987 when he was cast as Lieutenant Commander Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Over seven seasons and four feature films, he brought the android to life, eventually playing multiple members of the Soong family, including Dr. Arik Soong and Dr. Altan Inigo Soong. His commitment to the franchise extended to voicing Data in numerous video games and returning for the series Star Trek: Picard, where he portrayed several distinct characters in the final season.

Beyond his science fiction legacy, Spiner has maintained a prolific career in other genres. He recorded a 1991 album of 1940s pop standards titled Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back, a nod to his Data contact lenses. His filmography includes roles in Independence Day, The Aviator, and I Am Sam, while his voice work includes the Joker in Young Justice. In 2021, he blended memoir with fiction in his book Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir, showcasing his ability to pivot between reality and creative storytelling.
