A mobster's final act: the story behind the 2002 action comedy Avenging Angelo
In short: Released in 2002, Avenging Angelo stars Sylvester Stallone as a bodyguard protecting the daughter of a murdered mafia kingpin. Beyond its plot, the film is marked by the final performance of Anthony Quinn, who was battling terminal throat cancer during production and passed away before the movie reached audiences.
The film follows Frankie Delano, a bodyguard who has spent his life protecting the mafia boss Angelo Allieghieri and his daughter, Jennifer Barrett. Jennifer, raised by adoptive parents, is unaware of her true lineage until Angelo is gunned down in a restaurant by a hitman named Bruno. A pre-recorded DVD left by Angelo serves as the catalyst for the revelation, forcing Jennifer to confront her identity while navigating a crumbling marriage to the philandering Kip Barrett.
The narrative centers on a long-standing vendetta. Years prior, the mob boss Lucio Malatesta framed Angelo for the murder of a rival, Sammy Carboni. This deception fueled a vow of revenge from Sammy’s son, Gianni. As Frankie attempts to shield Jennifer from various threats, she finds herself drawn to an Italian romance novelist named Marcello. Frankie’s suspicions prove correct when it is revealed that Marcello is actually Gianni Carboni, the man responsible for Angelo's death, who now intends to eliminate Jennifer.
Directed by Martyn Burke, the production was filmed in Hamilton, Ontario, and Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. Despite its high-profile cast, which included Madeleine Stowe and Raoul Bova, the film struggled to find critical favor. It was Stallone’s second straight-to-video American release of 2002, following D-Tox. Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on eight reviews, and an average score of 4.41 out of 10. Scott Weinberg of eFILMCRITICS.com notably remarked that Stallone deserved better than the material provided.
The film remains a somber footnote in cinema history due to the circumstances surrounding Anthony Quinn. His portrayal of the doomed kingpin was his final contribution to the screen, as he succumbed to illness before the film's release. The project serves as a stark example of the disconnect between the high-stakes drama of a mob thriller and the behind-the-scenes reality of a legendary actor’s final days.
