In short: Before it became a Technicolor live-action spectacle, Disney's Babes in Toyland was envisioned as an animated production. This ambitious project underwent a dramatic transformation, shifting from a complex operetta adaptation to a colorful, high-energy musical that left even its stars divided on its quality.

Originally announced in May 1955 as an animated feature, the project underwent significant retooling. By August 1959, it had been reimagined as a live-action television movie, marking Disney's first live-action musical. The production faced several shifts in leadership; while Bill Walsh and Sidney Miller were initially assigned, Ward Kimball later took charge of the script and visual direction, though he was eventually removed from the film due to casting disagreements with Walt Disney.

The film's musical identity was heavily modified from Victor Herbert's 1903 operetta. Disney's team rewrote much of the lyrics and altered song tempos significantly. A notable example is the song "Toyland," which was transformed from a slow ballad into a much faster, march-like rhythm. This modernization was part of a broader effort to update the material for a younger audience, though critics at the time noted the loss of the original's quaintness.

While the film was a commercial success, earning $4.6 million in rentals across the United States and Canada, its critical reception was mixed. Reviewers from the Los Angeles Times and Variety suggested the film traded charm for a more 'gaudy' and 'mechanical' fantasy style. Even the cast members held nuanced views; Tommy Kirk described the film as a 'mess' and a 'klunker,' whereas Annette Funicello recalled it as her favorite filmmaking experience.

Despite the debate over its artistic merit, the film left a lasting legacy through its iconic toy soldiers. Designed by animator Bill Justice, these characters became a staple of Christmas parades at Disney theme parks globally. Their influence even extended to the 1964 film Mary Poppins, where they appeared in the stop-motion nursery sequence.
