In short: Originally intended as a Disney animated feature following the success of The Lion King, Elton John's Aida took a different path. Instead of animation, the project evolved into a stage musical that would eventually win four Tony Awards and become one of Broadway's longest-running productions.

The journey of Aida began with a children's storybook version of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon. In 1994, the Walt Disney Company acquired the rights for a proposed animated film. Despite his personal skepticism regarding the elitism of opera, John and lyricist Tim Rice immediately signed on for the stage project.

The production's path to Broadway was marked by technical and creative evolution. An early staging at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, ran from September 16 to November 8, 1998. That production featured a massive, six-ton gold pyramid-shaped set piece that cost nearly $10 million, but the mechanism frequently broke down. By the time the show reached Chicago in late 1999, the design was entirely overhauled by Bob Crowley.

The Broadway premiere finally arrived on March 23, 2000, at the Palace Theatre. The musical proved to be a significant commercial success, recovering its initial investment in 99 weeks and generating a $12 million profit. It ran for 1,852 performances until September 5, 2004, making it the 43rd longest run in Broadway history. The production was a critical heavyweight, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Original Score.

The story itself is a complex web of conflicting loyalties set in Ancient Egypt. It follows the romance between Radames, an Egyptian captain, and Aida, a Nubian woman. Their love is caught between the political ambitions of Radames' father, Chief Minister Zoser, and the shifting loyalties of Princess Amneris. The narrative concludes with a tragic twist where the lovers are sentenced to be buried alive, a fate that eventually leads to a lasting peace between their warring nations.
