Can a snake be a hero? Why this animated film chose the unhuggable
In short: In a world of cute animated protagonists, the 2021 film Back to the Outback dared to center its story on a misunderstood inland taipan snake. By flipping the script on traditional character design, directors Clare Knight and Harry Cripps challenged the industry's obsession with huggability to find beauty in monsters.
The film follows Maddie, a venomous snake who escapes a Sydney zoo alongside a group of fellow outcasts, including a funnel-web spider and a marbled scorpion. Their journey to the Outback is driven by a desire for acceptance, far from the public fear they face at the Australian Wildlife Park. Along the way, they encounter the Ugly Secret Society, a network of creatures who support one another precisely because they are labeled as dangerous or unappealing by humans.
For directors Clare Knight and Harry Cripps, the project was a deliberate departure from the 'cute' aesthetic of previous animated work. Cripps, who had previously developed the concept for the cancelled film Larrikins, explicitly sought to explore the 'dark side' of Australian wildlife. This creative choice met resistance from executives who questioned whether a snake could ever be a compelling lead. However, the film ultimately found a global audience, reaching Netflix Top 10 lists in 64 countries and amassing over 122 million views by 2024.
Critical reception remained divided. While some reviewers praised the wit and warmth of the message, others found the animation style uninspired. Despite the mixed scores on platforms like Metacritic, the film stands as a significant entry for Netflix Animation Studios. It serves as a testament to the idea that even the most feared creatures can be framed as heroes, provided the story is willing to look past the surface-level prejudices of its audience.
