In short: Before Michael Bay became a household name, he directed the 1995 action comedy Bad Boys. Despite critics dismissing the script as generic, the film’s massive commercial success and the undeniable chemistry between stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence turned it into a franchise that continues to dominate the box office today.

Released on April 7, 1995, Bad Boys was the feature directorial debut of Michael Bay. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film followed Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett as they attempted to recover $100 million in stolen heroin. The project had a turbulent development history; it was originally titled Bulletproof Hearts and intended for Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. After being placed into turnaround by Walt Disney Studios subsidiary Hollywood Pictures, it was sold to Columbia Pictures, where Will Smith eventually secured the lead role.

The production was notably fast, wrapping in just over two months between June 27 and August 31, 1994, to accommodate the stars' television schedules. Bay, dissatisfied with the script, frequently encouraged Smith and Lawrence to improvise dialogue. Many of the film's most memorable lines, including the convenience store confrontation, were created on the fly. Bay even engaged in a day-long argument with Smith to force the inclusion of the final line, 'I love you, man,' which the director felt was essential to grounding the characters' friendship amidst the film's relentless set pieces.

Critical reception was lukewarm, with the film holding a 44% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers like Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel criticized the movie for recycling clichés from the Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop series, arguing that the script failed to utilize the actors' talents. Despite these reviews, audiences were far more receptive, awarding the film an 'A' grade via CinemaScore. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, proving that high-octane action and charismatic leads could overcome a formulaic plot to spawn a multi-decade franchise.
