How a single character design idea became a 100 million copy phenomenon
In short: The Baki series is more than just underground fighting. From a spine featuring a demonic face inspired by a crab to a protagonist modeled after a girl's illustration, creator Keisuke Itagaki has built a massive, decades-long martial arts epic through sheer character eccentricity.
Since its debut in Weekly Shōnen Champion in September 1991, Keisuke Itagaki's Baki the Grappler has evolved into a global powerhouse, with over 100 million copies in circulation. The saga follows Baki Hanma, a teenager navigating a world of lethal, no-rules combat. Much of the series' visceral identity stems from Itagaki's unique visual inspirations. For instance, the terrifying 'demon face' on the back of Baki's father, Yujiro Hanma, was inspired by a photograph of a bodybuilder whose back resembled a Heikegani crab.
The narrative complexity is matched by an expansive, interconnected timeline of sequels and spin-offs. While the original series concluded in 1999, the franchise has continued through various iterations, including Baki (1999–2005), Baki Hanma (2005–2012), and Baki-Dou (2014–2018). The story has transitioned from Baki's childhood struggle to defeat his father to even more surreal territory, such as the reanimation of the 17th-century samurai Musashi Miyamoto using cloning technology.
Itagaki's approach to character design often blends unexpected influences. The character Baki Hanma was famously developed by modifying a Keibun Ōta drawing of a girl, incorporating more manly traits like a broader neck. This focus on 'eccentric characters' is what Itagari credits for the series' longevity. The franchise's reach extends far beyond the page, with multiple anime adaptations on TV Tokyo and Netflix, and a massive library of spin-offs ranging from yakuza adventures to isekai reincarnations.
