In short: In 2012, Universal Pictures released Battleship, a military sci-fi epic inspired by Hasbro’s classic board game. Despite a massive production budget exceeding $200 million and a star-studded cast, the film failed to resonate with critics or audiences, ultimately becoming one of the most significant financial failures in Hollywood history.

The development of Battleship was fraught with uncertainty. Initially greenlit with a $150 million budget, the project faced such severe pre-production challenges that Universal executives considered canceling it entirely. Chairman Adam Fogelson ultimately opted to increase the budget rather than absorb a $30 million loss, a decision that proved disastrous when the film grossed only $303 million worldwide against a production cost of $209–220 million. Analysts estimated the studio and Hasbro lost approximately $150 million on the venture.

The film’s narrative centers on a naval exercise in Hawaii that is interrupted by an extraterrestrial fleet. To create the alien soundscape, director Peter Berg collaborated with composer Steve Jablonsky, who famously recorded the mechanical noises of an MRI machine to craft the extraterrestrial theme. The production relied heavily on real-world military assets, featuring active U.S. Navy destroyers like the USS John Paul Jones and the USS Sampson, alongside the decommissioned battleship USS Missouri, which served as a central set piece for the climax.

Critical reception was largely negative, with many reviewers labeling the film a formulaic, loud, and poorly written exercise in cinematic excess. Critics frequently compared it to the Transformers franchise, noting a similar reliance on spectacle over substance. However, the film found defenders who appreciated its earnest tone and nostalgic elements. While it was a theatrical bomb, the film experienced a surprising resurgence in popularity a decade later on various streaming platforms, shifting its legacy from a total failure to a cult-adjacent curiosity.
