The 1980 film Raise the Titanic was so expensive it inspired a legendary quip.
In short: Producer Lew Grade famously remarked that it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic than to produce this ambitious adventure film. Despite a massive budget and elaborate scale models, the movie failed at the box office, leaving a legacy defined by financial ruin and a very frustrated author.
Based on Clive Cussler’s 1976 bestseller, Raise the Titanic follows a Cold War mission to recover the sunken ocean liner to retrieve a fictional radioactive mineral called byzanium. The production was marked by immense technical challenges, including the construction of massive scale models at CBS Studio Center. Because the real Titanic was not discovered until 1985, the film operated on the assumption that the ship remained intact, rather than broken in two as it actually lies on the ocean floor.
The film’s budget ballooned to an estimated $35 million, while it grossed only about $7 million. Costs spiraled due to constant script rewrites, the need for larger water tanks in Malta to film underwater scenes, and the conversion of an old Greek ocean liner, the SS Athinai, to serve as a double for the Titanic. Director Stanley Kramer left the project in 1977 due to creative differences over casting and the heavy reliance on miniatures, receiving a $500,000 payout.
The production was plagued by misfortune, including a massive storm in St Ives, Cornwall, that destroyed a church intended for a final scene. While the film was a commercial failure, the musical score by John Barry remains highly regarded. Cussler was so dissatisfied with the adaptation that he refused to grant rights for further film versions of his work. The film’s poor performance is often cited as a key factor in Lew Grade’s eventual withdrawal from the film industry.
