Why the twelfth Scooby-Doo series traded dark mysteries for a comedic road trip
In short: As the twelfth iteration of the iconic franchise, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! pivoted away from the romantic subplots and darker tone of its predecessor. By blending original 1969 character traits with a fresh, edgy visual style, the show reimagined the gang's final summer break as a comedic, monster-filled road trip.
Announced in March 2014, the series was designed to be a lighter, ensemble-focused comedy. Producer Zac Moncrief emphasized that the show aimed to capture the spirit of the original 1969 series rather than becoming a meta or campy parody. This shift meant abandoning the serialized romantic arcs that defined the previous incarnation, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, in favor of episodic adventures where the gang travels in the Mystery Machine, which Fred has updated with modern appliances.
The production process saw significant changes to the cast and creative team. This series marked the first time the franchise moved forward without Casey Kasem, who had voiced Shaggy from 1969 until his retirement during the production of Mystery Incorporated. Following Kasem's death in June 2014, Frank Welker remained the sole original cast member involved. Additionally, the show introduced Kate Micucci as the new voice of Velma, ending Mindy Cohn's long tenure in the role.
The show's distribution path was notably complex. While it was initially slated for the Boomerang network, it began its American broadcast on Cartoon Network in October 2015. After a mid-season hiatus, the remaining episodes were shifted to Boomerang’s television and streaming platforms. The series concluded in March 2018, having navigated a fragmented release schedule that saw its final episodes debut across different media formats.
Despite the logistical hurdles, the core premise remained consistent: the gang seeks adventure during their final summer together, only to be dogged by monsters at every stop. By focusing on these encounters through a comedic lens, the show maintained the franchise's tradition of mystery-solving while establishing a distinct identity through its simplified, edgy character designs.
