In short: In the psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep, a woman with severe amnesia relies on a hidden camera to reconstruct her reality. Each day, she wakes up with no memory of her life, only to discover that the man claiming to be her husband may be hiding a terrifying secret.

Directed by Rowan Joffé and released in 2014, the film adapts S. J. Watson’s 2011 novel. It follows Christine Lucas, who suffers from memory loss following a violent attack fourteen years prior. Every morning, she wakes up beside a man named Ben, who claims to be her husband and attributes her condition to a car accident. To cope, she works with a neuropsychologist, Dr. Mike Nasch, who provides a digital camera to document her daily progress and thoughts, urging her to keep the device hidden from her spouse.

The narrative unfolds as Christine begins to uncover inconsistencies in her life. She learns she had a son, Adam, and discovers that the man she lives with is not actually Ben, but Mike—the man with whom she had an affair before her attack. Mike, who had viciously assaulted her after she refused to reveal their affair to her real husband, has been masquerading as Ben to control her. The film culminates in a struggle for survival as Christine attempts to escape his manipulation and reclaim her identity.

Critics offered mixed reviews, with many unfavorably comparing the film to Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller Memento, which also explored memory loss. While some reviewers felt the film relied too heavily on thriller clichés and implausible plot points, Nicole Kidman’s performance as the vulnerable yet determined Christine received widespread praise. Despite the critical reception, the film remains a notable exploration of trust, identity, and the fragility of memory in the face of deception.
