Can reliving the same day finally teach a high school student how to live?
In short: Samantha Kingston has it all: popularity, friends, and a boyfriend. But after a fatal car crash on Cupid's Day, she wakes up to find herself trapped in a repeating time loop. To break the cycle, she must confront the consequences of her social cruelty and discover the true meaning of kindness.
Directed by Ry Russo-Young and based on Lauren Oliver's 2010 novel, the 2017 film Before I Fall explores the transformation of Samantha Kingston, a teenager forced to relive February 12 repeatedly. The narrative begins with Sam and her friends mocking an outsider named Juliet Sykes, a cycle of bullying that culminates in a tragic car accident. When Sam realizes she is caught in a temporal loop, she initially experiments with apathy and rebellion before shifting her focus toward making amends with those she previously mistreated.
The film's mechanism relies on Sam's evolving perspective as she navigates the same twenty-four hours. She learns that Juliet's isolation stems from a long-standing grudge involving a childhood secret, and that her own social standing was built on the exclusion of others. By choosing to act with empathy rather than malice, Sam attempts to rewrite the day's outcome. The climax sees her intervening to save Juliet from suicide, ultimately sacrificing herself to break the loop and finding personal redemption in her final moments.
Released by Open Road Films, the production faced a long journey from the acquisition of rights in 2010 to its theatrical debut in March 2017. Despite mixed critical reception—holding a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the film was noted for Zoey Deutch's lead performance. It performed modestly at the box office, grossing $18.9 million worldwide against a $5 million budget. While critics were divided on the film's conclusion, it remains a notable entry in the teen drama genre for its attempt to blend familiar high school tropes with a philosophical look at moral growth and the weight of our daily choices.
