Why the sequel to a blockbuster disaster film became a total cinematic shipwreck
In short: Beyond the Poseidon Adventure arrived in 1979 as a high-stakes follow-up to a massive hit, yet it cratered instantly. Despite a star-studded cast and a premise involving stolen plutonium, the film was panned by critics as a repetitive, low-budget disaster that failed to recapture the original's suspenseful magic.
The production of Beyond the Poseidon Adventure was fraught with creative and commercial turbulence. Originally, producer Irwin Allen envisioned a sequel set in a collapsing mountain tunnel, a concept that was eventually repurposed for the 1996 film Daylight. When the actual sequel moved forward, it was based on a novel by Paul Gallico, who died in 1976 before finishing the book. The final film, however, bore little resemblance to Gallico's writing, opting instead for a plot involving salvage hunters, hidden gold, and a nefarious scheme to recover stolen plutonium from the capsized liner.
Filming began in September 1978 at The Burbank Studios, utilizing sets modeled after the RMS Queen Mary. Despite the effort, the result was a critical and commercial failure. Critics were scathing; reviewers like Gene Siskel and Janet Maslin criticized the film for its shoddily painted sets, repetitive dialogue, and lack of the mounting tension that defined the 1972 original. Variety described it as a virtual, less exciting remake, while others labeled it a banal and witless production that felt like a cut-price imitation of the genre.
The financial performance was equally disastrous. With an estimated budget of $10 million, the film managed to recoup only 20% of its costs at the box office. Its reputation has remained largely negative, holding a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a weighted average of 22 out of 100 on Metacritic. Despite its poor reception, the film has seen various home media releases, including a 2023 Blu-ray edition, ensuring that this cinematic curiosity remains accessible to those interested in the history of 1970s disaster cinema.
