A star-studded crime drama that earned just six hundred dollars on its opening weekend.
In short: Billionaire Boys Club, a 2018 biographical drama, promised a gripping look at a real-life 1980s Ponzi scheme. Despite a cast featuring Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey, the film became a commercial disaster, hampered by off-peak theater scheduling and the fallout from misconduct allegations against one of its lead actors.
The film chronicles the rise and fall of a social club in 1980s Los Angeles, where wealthy young men, led by Joe Hunt, attempted to get rich quick through a Ponzi scheme. The project, directed by James Cox, was based on extensive research into court documents and transcripts. It aimed to blend the financial intensity of Wall Street with the gritty, criminal descent of Alpha Dog. Production began in December 2015, with a cast that included Judd Nelson, who had previously starred as Joe Hunt in a 1987 television miniseries about the same events.
The film's trajectory changed significantly following sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey in October 2017. Although Vertical Entertainment decided to proceed with a release to honor the work of the hundreds of crew members involved, the film suffered a catastrophic commercial reception. It was released via video on demand in July 2018, followed by a limited theatrical run in August. The domestic opening weekend box office take was a mere $618 from 11 theaters, marking the lowest opening of Spacey's career.
Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 7% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews described it as a derivative effort that failed to find a consistent tone, though some critics acknowledged that Spacey’s performance as the con man Ron Levin was a standout. Ultimately, the film grossed only $2.7 million worldwide against a $15 million production budget, serving as a stark example of how external controversies and limited distribution strategies can impact a film's commercial viability.
