In short: In the 2008 thriller 88 Minutes, a renowned forensic psychiatrist is forced into a desperate race against time after receiving a death threat. While the film featured Al Pacino in the lead role, it was savaged by critics and struggled to find its footing at the global box office.

The film follows Dr. Jack Gramm, a forensic psychiatrist whose expert testimony helped convict serial killer Jon Forster. Years later, as Forster’s execution approaches, Gramm is targeted by a mysterious caller who claims he has exactly 88 minutes to live. This countdown mirrors a traumatic event from Gramm’s past, where his sister was murdered during an 88-minute window. As the plot unfolds, Gramm navigates a series of threats, including bomb scares and the murder of his associates, eventually discovering that the perpetrator is his former student, Lauren Douglas, who acted as a proxy for the imprisoned Forster.

Development of the project was long and turbulent. Originally pitched by Gary Scott Thompson in 2000, the film was rejected by major studios before being picked up for production. James Foley was initially attached to direct, but delays eventually led to Jon Avnet taking the helm. Filming took place in the Vancouver area between October and December 2005. Despite the involvement of a high-profile cast including Al Pacino, Alicia Witt, and Leelee Sobieski, the final product failed to resonate with audiences or reviewers.

Upon its release, the film was met with overwhelming negativity. It holds a 5% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 17 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics described the work as inept, and it was even nominated for two Golden Raspberry Awards. Financially, the film grossed $32.6 million against a $30 million budget, barely covering its production costs. Despite its poor reception, the intellectual property remained valuable enough that in 2013, Original Entertainment announced plans for a Bollywood remake as part of a five-picture deal with Millennium Films.
