Why a Netflix horror film sparked a global wave of dangerous blindfolded stunts
In short: When the 2018 thriller Bird Box premiered, it became a cultural phenomenon, drawing millions of viewers to its premise of sight-based survival. Yet, the film’s central mechanic—navigating the world blindfolded—leaped off the screen, inspiring a viral internet challenge that forced YouTube and authorities to intervene against real-world harm.
Directed by Susanne Bier and based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel, Bird Box follows Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, as she navigates a post-apocalyptic landscape plagued by entities that drive observers to suicide. The film, which premiered at AFI Fest in November 2018, became a massive streaming success for Netflix, recording 89 million household views within its first four weeks. Despite its popularity, critics offered mixed reviews, often citing a thin screenplay that struggled to balance its high-concept premise with effective tension.
The film’s influence quickly transcended cinema through the Bird Box challenge, where participants attempted daily tasks while blindfolded. While Netflix initially partnered with streamers for controlled, game-based challenges, the trend turned hazardous as individuals began performing stunts in public. Incidents included a 17-year-old driver in Utah crashing into oncoming traffic and a YouTuber filming his partner standing on a railway track, prompting a police investigation. These events forced YouTube to update its community guidelines in January 2019, explicitly banning content that promotes dangerous activities.
Beyond the controversy, the production faced its own internal friction. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who composed the film’s score, publicly criticized the final sound mix, calling the experience a waste of time. The film also sparked debate over its use of real-world tragedy, having originally included footage of the 2013 Lac-Mégantic rail disaster before Netflix replaced it. Despite these hurdles, the franchise expanded with the 2023 spin-off Bird Box Barcelona, marking the start of a broader, multi-language cinematic universe.
