How Harley Quinn’s Breakup Led to a High-Stakes Gotham City Crime Caper
In short: After parting ways with the Joker, Harley Quinn finds herself a target for every criminal in Gotham. To survive, she forms an unlikely alliance with a group of women to protect a young pickpocket. This R-rated spin-off reimagines the DC anti-heroine in a chaotic, neon-soaked battle against a ruthless crime lord.
Directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (2020) serves as a sequel and spin-off to the 2016 film Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie, who produced the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, pitched the concept in 2015 as an R-rated girl gang story. Robbie insisted that Harley Quinn, a character she felt thrived on interaction, should not be relegated to a standalone film. The project eventually brought together a diverse team of vigilantes, including Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain, to face off against the narcissistic crime lord Roman Sionis, also known as Black Mask.
The film’s production was defined by a commitment to female leadership, with Yan becoming the first female Asian director to helm a superhero film. Filming took place in Los Angeles from January to April 2019, utilizing a working title, Fox Force Five, inspired by Pulp Fiction. The narrative centers on a stolen diamond containing account numbers to the Bertinelli crime family fortune. As Harley and her makeshift team navigate the criminal underworld, they must contend with Sionis’s sadistic henchman, Victor Zsasz, and the fallout of Harley’s public declaration of independence from the Joker.
Despite receiving generally positive reviews, the film faced significant box office challenges. It grossed $205.5 million worldwide, falling short of its estimated break-even point of $250–300 million. Analysts and the director herself noted that the film’s performance was hampered by factors like its R rating, a confusing title, and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yan later reflected on the undue pressure placed on female-led projects, noting that the film’s commercial struggle was often unfairly used to argue against the viability of such stories in the superhero genre.
The film’s aesthetic and tone were heavily influenced by its music and visual style, featuring a reimagining of the classic song Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. While the theatrical run was cut short by global theater closures, the film found a second life through digital releases and its eventual debut on HBO Max. Ultimately, the story concludes with the formation of the Birds of Prey vigilante team, marking a new chapter for the characters outside the shadow of their former criminal ties.
