A family gathers for a final weekend, but secrets threaten to derail their goodbye.
In short: In the 2019 drama Blackbird, a matriarch battling an incurable illness invites her relatives to a seaside home for a planned end-of-life procedure. As the weekend unfolds, long-buried tensions and unexpected revelations test the family's resolve, forcing them to confront the true meaning of a final farewell.
Directed by Roger Michell and written by Christian Torpe, Blackbird serves as an American reimagining of the 2014 Danish film Silent Heart. The narrative centers on Lily, a mother who, with the support of her husband Paul, decides to utilize euthanasia to end her suffering before her condition deteriorates further. The film assembles a notable ensemble cast, including Susan Sarandon as the matriarch and Kate Winslet and Mia Wasikowska as her daughters, to navigate the emotional complexities of this final, orchestrated weekend.
The story is set at a coastal residence, a location chosen for its personal significance to the couple. While the family attempts to maintain a sense of normalcy through shared activities like charades and an early Christmas celebration, the impending procedure acts as a catalyst for conflict. The daughters, Jennifer and Anna, struggle with the weight of their mother's choice. Anna, who has a history of mental health struggles, initially attempts to intervene, while Jennifer discovers evidence of a long-standing, complicated dynamic between her father and a family friend.
The production process saw several shifts, with Susan Sarandon stepping into the role of Lily after Diane Keaton was originally attached. Filming took place in the South Coast of England, with the production utilizing a beachside house near West Wittering to stand in for a setting in The Hamptons. Since its premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, the film has received a mixed reception from critics. While some reviewers noted that the storytelling felt somewhat superficial, many praised the cast for bringing genuine emotional depth to such a delicate and sensitive subject matter.
