In short: In 1991, the Buffalo Bisons achieved a feat that remains a benchmark for Minor League Baseball. While many teams strive for major league status, this franchise carved out a unique legacy of massive crowds, innovative promotions, and a deep historical lineage that predates its modern iteration.

The current Buffalo Bisons organization was founded in 1979, but it serves as the successor to a long history of franchises using the name in Buffalo. This lineage includes a major league team from 1879 to 1885 and a prominent minor league franchise that operated from 1886 to 1970. Sahlen Field, the largest Triple-A stadium in the USA, currently hosts the Toronto Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate. Bold marketing and strategic ownership drove the franchise's ascent to fame. In 1983, Robert E. Rich Jr. purchased the team and elevated it to Triple-A status in 1985. He gained recognition for high-profile promotional tie-ins, including hosting yearly post-game concerts featuring The Beach Boys. The franchise originally began as the Jersey City A's before moving to Buffalo in 1979. During the 1980s, the team utilized a unique mascot named Buster T. Bison. They also featured a beer vendor known as the Earl of Bud who performed a famous dance routine. This era also included a mime known as Loud Mouth.

The Bisons reached a peak in 1991, selling 1,240,951 tickets to set a Minor League Baseball single-season attendance record. Beyond the numbers, the Bisons have maintained a distinct cultural identity. They established the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 and have featured unique local traditions, such as the 'Wing, Cheese & Carrot' mascot race and the playing of Tina Turner's 'The Best' after home victories. Despite periods of struggle, including a low-attendance era under the New York Mets affiliation, the team remains a staple of the International League, balancing its historical weight with modern entertainment.
