In short: The César Award is the pinnacle of French cinema, yet its name isn't just a tribute to a sculptor. It serves as a dual homage to a legendary performer and a deliberate linguistic wink at the American Oscars.

Established in 1976 by Georges Cravenne, the César Awards were designed to provide France with a prestigious equivalent to the Academy Awards. The name carries a layered meaning: it honors the sculptor César Baldaccini, who designed the trophy, but it also pays tribute to Raimu. Raimu was a celebrated French actor known for his role as the character César in Marcel Pagnol's Marseille trilogy. Furthermore, the name was chosen as a 'wink' because it sounds remarkably similar to the word 'Oscars' in French.

The physical trophy itself is a distinct piece of art. Unlike the gold-plated Oscars, the César statues are compressed sculptures made of polished natural bronze. Designed in 1975, the current 8 by 8 cm trophy weighs 3.6 kg and was cast in the Bocquel foundry in Normandy. The award was first presented during the 'Night of Caesar' on April 3, 1976, with the legendary Jean Gabin presiding over the ceremony from a wheelchair just months before his death.

The selection process is rigorous, involving approximately 4,000 industry professionals divided into 12 different colleges, including actors, directors, and technicians. To remain eligible, voters must demonstrate a consistent career and hold a double sponsorship from the governing body. While the awards have evolved—expanding to 22 categories today and introducing specific honors like the César du public to reward popular comedies—the core remains a professional gatekeeping of French artistic achievement, supported by the Ministry of Culture.
