The elite pipeline where future NHL stars are forged
In short: Before they reach the NHL, the world's best young hockey talents navigate a high-stakes junior circuit. The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) acts as the ultimate incubator, balancing professional-grade development with amateur status to produce the next generation of icons.
Established during 1975 as the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League, the CHL acts as a parent body for three main divisions: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and the Western Hockey League (WHL). Across four US states and ten Canadian provinces, these three leagues will feature 61 teams during the 2025–26 season. The CHL is widely regarded as the premier global destination for developing professional players, serving as a primary supplier of talent and officials for the NHL, AHL, and ECHL.
The league operates on a complex intersection of amateur and professional status. Historically, CHL players were considered ineligible for NCAA college hockey because they received paying stipends and could sign entry-level NHL contracts. However, a class action lawsuit regarding a 16-year-old player's eligibility led the NCAA to change its position; as of the 2025–26 season, CHL players are no longer ineligible for college hockey. To maintain the pipeline, the CHL also offers scholarship programs for players who choose to attend U Sports institutions instead of turning professional.
The CHL's influence is cemented by its annual events, most notably the Memorial Cup tournament. This championship features the winners of the three leagues plus a host team selected through a bidding process. The organization also manages the CHL USA Prospects Challenge, which showcases top draft-eligible players in collaboration with NHL Central Scouting. While the league has historically hosted international events like the Canada/Russia Series, it cancelled the series in 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
